In 1993, SAP-VN started the Orthopedic Surgery Program, also known as “A Chance to Walk!”. This program provides free corrective surgery to impoverished disabled children in Vietnam. More than 12,500 disabled children have received help from SAP-VN through this program. More than half of our annual budget goes into this project, which makes it the biggest and most important project of SAP-VN.

A Gift of Sight

Cataract is one of the most common causes of blindness that affect many elderly people in Vietnam. It can be safely treated with surgery to restore sight and improve the quality of life of those who suffer from this condition. However, many elderly people in Vietnam cannot afford the cost of cataract surgery, which averages about $60, and therefore suffer from loss of sight as a consequence.

The congenital heart defect surgery project was initiated due to a request for help from An Giang Children’s Fund in 2012. SAP-VN expanded the program to Quảng Nam in 2019, and Saigon in 2022. The program sponsors surgeries for children with congenital heart diseases aging from 4 months to 16 years old. The average cost per case is $3000.

Since 2012, SAP-VN has coordinated with schools in rural areas in Vietnam to donate bicycles to poor students. The recipients are nominated by their teachers. Every year, SAP-VN donates about 200 – 250 bicycles to students in An Giang, Đồng Tháp, Cần Thơ, and Bình Định. And since 2018, during the Mobile Care mission in summer, SAP-VN also directly selects recipients from the pool of patients at the Mobile Care clinic.
